Bon Appètit recently featured the Charleston Farmer’s Market in their list of Top 10 Lunches at Farmers’ Markets from around the country.  Fresh crepes, shrimp and grits, and pickled okra were among their favorites.  In addition to the downtown Charleston scene, locals enjoy farmer’s markets in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, North Charleston, and Summerville throughout the week.

The new Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary school opens to students for the first day of school tomorrow, August 18th, 2010.  Mount Pleasant families are excited about the new media room and advanced technology, which includes a SmartBoard in every classroom and three computer labs. Parents and faculty say this is a much needed upgrade from the previous 1950s- era school building. In 2008, Mount Pleasant Waterworks partnered with the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival Association to protect and preserve the Mt Pleasant, SC sweetgrass basket-making industry.  Volunteers planted twelve hundred plants near the Rifle Range Road Operations Center.  This July, area Mt Pleasant basket-makers harvested the very first crop. With a recent shortage of plants in the area, this new partnership aims to benefit Lowcounrty artisans who depend on the sweetgrass basket-making industry to support their families.  Be sure to visit the new Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Center at Mount Pleasant’s Memorial Waterfront Park to learn about this beautiful and intricate Gullah trade, dating back more than 300 years.
